14/11/19: German Federal Government’s COP 25 Briefing

On 14th November PhD student Marianne Bartels will be attending the German Federal Government’s COP 25 Briefing at the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. She is invited through her role as senior researcher at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies Potsdam on behalf of the German Climate Federation (Deutsches Klima-Konsortium or DKK) and the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit or BMU).

The DKK represents the leading players of German climate and climate impact research encompassing more than 20 renowned research organisations. The BMU is a ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany and was set up in 1986 as a response to the Chernobyl Disaster). Following introductory remarks by Heiko Maas, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Svenja Schulze, Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, will explain the extent of human intervention in the climate system to date and how this system can only be stabilised by determined action. The key messages of the latest IPCC reports will be presented during the second part of the event, followed by a discussion on how the urgency of climate protection can be conveyed more clearly and how determined action can be encouraged. The third part of the event will deal with the restructuring of the economy. Using the example of a carbon price and other instruments, this session will clarify what the economy needs in order to become sustainable. Marianne will report back for anyone interested on the discussions which take place.
