27/08/21: GOSSIP learning update

Awards for excellence in education for sustainable development: The new Golden Dandelion awards for excellence in education for sustainable development are now being released by the University’s Sustainability in the Curriculum Committee. The Committee developed this award because of the high standard of all the submissions for the Prize this year, and all submissions received it!  Congratulations to Antje Brown and Louise Reid of SGSD for theirs. Everyone running a module in the School is encouraged to enter next year and get this new stamp of approval. It is being made available to students to support advising decisions and is being advertised externally.  We’d like to see all of our modules gain the award.

See here for awards and modules, and you can see more about the work of this committee here.

Learning for Sustainability Scotland: Staff might consider joining Scotland’s United Nations University Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development (UNU RCE in ESD – Learning for Sustainability Scotland) – it is free! You can sign up to a bulletin and join the Global RCE conference which is being led by Learning for Sustainability Scotland together with the UNU Service Centre from Japan.  Rehema is Chair of LfSS and is on the organising committee. You can sign up here.

UNESCO ESD conference: For those interested in international experiences and examples, the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development was run virtually/remotely this year, earlier in the summer. Rehema chaired a session – there are specific panel sessions you may wish to hear and Arjen Waals did an excellent concluding talk, as always.

Yet more ESD opportunities! The EAUC has a Topic Support Network on ESD and runs online webinars (and in person in less Covid ridden times) (Rehema is a co-convenor). You can see presentations and input from past sessions (including those just passed on the QAA ESD guidelines), and sign up for future sessions here.

Covid-19 and education for sustainable development: Rehema White chaired and spoke at the EAUC ESD TSN latest webinar on Covid-19 causes, consequences and curriculum in relation to ESD on 16th September. This translates as the Topic Support Network on Education for Sustainable Development run by the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges. It is a community of practice that those teaching SD may wish to join; it is free and additional webinars are planned. Find out more here.

Congratulations to SD graduate Iga! SD graduate Iga Józefiak got in touch with Rehema White to say that a shortened version of her dissertation on “Revitalization of brownfields on the example of golf courses” won a competition for the best student work “Sustainable Development 2019”, organized by Prof. Jerzy Buzek (Polish MEP) and is being published. She is currently doing a Masters in Environmental Sciences with a specialization in climate impacts in Geneva and in negotiation for a PhD there.
